This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
