American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to delays due to weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 American flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields said flights would be delayed due to a lack of workers - among the peak after the closure started.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in the past.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," the official stated.

On Sunday, certain flights were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth most active airport in the nation and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were operating normally by midday.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the FAA indicated DFW, the second most active airport in the country, could encounter difficulties from low staffing later in the day.

The agency warned travelers in the state to check with airlines about revised flight schedules.

The situation comes ahead of the third match of the championship, which is scheduled in LA on Monday evening, and about one month before the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak periods to travel by air in the US.

Strain on US air travel contributed to ending a government shutdown in 2019. At the time, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and affected airline operations, including aviator instruction.

It led a number of flight controllers to remain absent on the identical date on January 25, 2019, briefly halting travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the period was in his first term as leader, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, bringing an end to the federal closure after thirty-five days.
