California is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.
Following 25 long years, not a single part of California is experiencing water scarcity. This milestone arrives after challenging years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated wildfire risks and pressured its huge agribusiness.
A Chart Reveals Zero Abnormally Dry Areas
The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program illustrated that the entire state is clear of dry or drought conditions. This shift was driven by multiple significant storms that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their typical levels.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a climate scientist.
After Severe Systems to Soggy Celebrations
The journey here featured intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, leading to extensive inundation, electrical failures, and tragic losses. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Until late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were still classified as experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.
A Crucial Snowpack Is Below Average
However, hydrologists note that the end of drought status should not be confused with having no water worries. Latest data of the high-elevation snow indicate it is only about 70% of the typical level.
This frozen reservoir, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for long-term water security. Water officials point out that it is premature to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.
“What we are observing right now is more rain than snow,” said a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Although the monitor indicates no dryness, the next challenge is to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health for the rest of the year.
